The Flop

At this time, three cards will be placed face up in the center of the poker table. These first three cards are what are known as "the flop" and they are the also called "community cards", which means all players involved in the hand have the right to use these cards to create the best possible poker hand. There will end up being five total cards in the center of the poker table with each being community cards. You and all other Texas Holdem poker players still in the hand can use up to all five of the cards, along with the two you start with to create the best five-card poker hand.

This round of betting (and all others following) begins with the first poker player still involved in the game that is seated to the left of the dealer button. This round of betting has two additional options besides the other three previously discussed for betting including:

1) This poker player can "check" which means make "no bet" at this time. When this happens, all other poker players involved in the hand after them can do the same. When this occurs, you will get what is referred to as a "free card".

2) This player can also make a "bet" in the amount required for the game being played. Again, the sum necessary will be shown on your screen. This amount is typically the minimum limit on a limit Texas Holdem poker game. An example of this would be $1 in a $1/$2 limit game or $10 for a $10/$20 limit game.

In other words, each player must do one of the five previously detailed "actions" (check, bet, call, raise or fold) during their turn. This continues around the poker table until all of the Texas Holdem players still involved in the hand have done so.

Texas Holdem Download Tip: Any time you are playing online Texas Holdem and have a chance to see "free cards" during a round - do so. This means - do not fold your hand or throw your cards away, if no one before you places a bet - Otherwise, everyone "checks" during their turn. You might as well at least see the card and see if it helps your hand. Even if you were planning on folding, you may be able to catch a good card. Just remember to get rid of the hand, if there is no improvement to it and some other player places a bet. There are some rounds of poker when no one makes a bet, so be ready for this.
